Recording Points

Store a numbered position with notes or a reusable recording form.

For VIA 2.0. Some controls are unavailable in earlier versions.

Manual recording combines a fresh device position with the details you enter. You need an active survey, location access and a working CRS. Use General for a quick observation or choose a template for a regular feature.

Record a General observation

  1. Open Survey, create or open a survey and tap Continue.
  2. Set the point number, then tap Record Point.
  3. Tap the Template selector and choose General.
  4. Enter a point number such as OBS01, a Label and any Notes.
  5. Dismiss the keyboard and check GPS accuracy. Tap Store Point while positioned at the observation.

Store Point obtains the next position fix; it does not store the position from when you first opened the form. Keep the device at the observation until saving finishes. While waiting for the fix, the button becomes Cancel.

Use a template

Select the required form from the Template selector, complete its fields and store the point in the same way. VIA remembers the last chosen recording template during the current app session. The Manhole example in Creating and Using Templates shows a complete custom-form workflow.

Check the result

After storing, the session shows the increased point count and next point number. Check numbering when continuing an existing survey. Use Undo Last only if you need to remove the last observation; saved observations do not currently reopen as editable forms.

Photographs are separate from template fields. An active VIA Pro subscription enables new camera/library acquisition; ordinary point and template recording does not require it.

If you cannot store

Check the active survey, coordinate system, GPS access and any invalid numeric field. Wait for photograph acquisition to finish. If the keyboard hides the action area, dismiss it. Reported GPS accuracy is a device estimate, not an acceptance test against your survey specification.
