Calculator

Convert between grid coordinates and chainage/offset.

For VIA 2.0. Some controls are unavailable in earlier versions.

The Calculator uses the selected horizontal alignment. It can run without a live location. Confirm that your input grid coordinates and alignment use the same coordinate system and units.

Find chainage and offset from a grid position

  1. Import and select the required alignment in Settings.
  2. Open Calc. Under Input mode, select E/N.
  3. Enter Easting and Northing. The alignment-position result updates as you enter valid values.
  4. Read the chainage and offset. Positive offset is right of the alignment, negative is left, looking along increasing chainage.

Find a grid position from chainage and offset

  1. Select CH/OFF input.
  2. Enter a chainage within the alignment and the offset magnitude. For example, use 2.000 and choose LEFT for a point two units to the left.
  3. Read the grid result. Switching input mode clears the previous inputs.

Coordinate order and alignment terminology follow Display conventions: you may see N/E, STA/OFF or M/OFF. Enter chainage as a plain number, such as 1250; the result may display as 1+250.000.

Copy and paste

Use a result’s copy control and the input’s clipboard control to transfer VIA coordinates. Supported clipboard text uses E=… N=… or CH=… OFF=…; an unrelated spreadsheet row will not necessarily paste.

If no result appears

Check that an alignment is selected and both inputs contain valid numbers. Use a chainage inside the source geometry. This is a horizontal calculation; it does not calculate a design level.
